Abingdon edges Streaks in 7th
3/17 - (ABINGDON) GHS' varsity softball team got the pitching performance they had hoped for Thursday, but could not score enough runs to get past Abingdon in a tough 2-1 loss.
The host Lady Commandoes scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when pitcher Beep Jones singled home the deciding tally with two outs. Jones had three of Abingdon's six hits in the contest.
Streak sophomore Katie McGee was tagged with the loss despite a 10 strikeout performance. She scattered six hits over seven innings and walked only two. GHS' only fielding error in the game came in the bottom of the seventh and Mo Maxwell, who reached on what should have been a routine ground-out, scored the winning run.
Abingdon broke a scoreless tie earlier in the contest with a solo run in the third. A ground out plated Des Dorth who had walked, stole second and reached third on a passed ball. GHS tied the score in the fifth when Chelsey Weigand drew a walk and eventually scored on an RBI single by Jordan Marshall. The Streaks had runner in scoring position in first two innings, could not take advantage. They went down in order in both the sixth and seventh frames.
Katie VanHootegem, Kelsey McKillip and McGee also had hits for the GHS cause.
