Welcome to the
Abingdon Community Unit School District 217 webpage.
Abingdon CUSD #217 serves families and citizens in an
89-square mile area. The district includes two attendance
centers for students in grades Pre-K through 12. Enrollments for
the 2008-2009 school year were as follows: Hedding Elementary-
303; Abingdon Middle School - 176; and Abingdon High school –
247.
High school students choose from a curriculum including dual
credit and vocational courses. The district partners with Carl
Sandburg College for the dual credit course and is a member of
the Galesburg Vocational Area Cooperative for vocational
courses. Vocational
course offering include welding, nursing, and advanced computer
certification. Abingdon’s focus on 21st century
skills includes the use of SMART board technologies in all
classrooms. The computer to student ratio at the elementary is
1:5 and the computer to student ratio at the middle-high schools
is 1:1.5. Abingdon is a member of the Knox-Warren Special
Education Coop. Students
have the opportunities to participate in a variety of clubs and
extracurricular sports. Abingdon is a member of the Illinois
Elementary School Association and Illinois High School
Association.
We offer our
elementary building for use to our citizens to walk before
school begins.

schools. A senior citizen sports pass is also available.
According to the Galesburg Register Mail, we are proud to say
the district has the lowest per-pupil expenditures for all
districts schools in Knox County. Abingdon Middle School was
recognized as a Spotlight School by the Illinois State Board of
Education.
Spotlight Schools awards honor high poverty, high performing
schools where at least 50% of students are classified as
low-income and at least 60% passed (met or exceeded standards)
the state reading and mathematics tests. All Spotlight Schools
made annual yearly progress and sustained their performance over
the past three years.
In October of
2008, Abingdon CUSD #217 and the Abingdon Rotary Blue Ribbon
Committee received the NREA CARES Award.
The National Rural Education Association’s Communities
And Rural Education Service (CARES) Award is sponsored by Great
American Financial Resources.
This award recognizes school partnerships.
The partnership between the Abingdon School District and
the Abingdon Rotary Blue Ribbon Committee was created to improve
community properties and energize the community spirit through
activities.
